President Obama is delivering his speech to (some) students today. While the official text is quite innocuous, a fellow I know sent me a draft of the original. He said that he didn’t have the full text because the tin foil he wears on his head to block out the aliens interfered with his receiving the transmission from his secret spy in the Whitehouse (an intelligent plant from Atlantis). In any case, he are some excerpts from the speech Obama was supposed to give:
Prepared remarks of President Obama’s back to school event
Here are prepared remarks that President Obama is believed to have intended to deliver at noon ET Tuesday at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.
Source: Obviously Not The White House
Assalamu Alilkum Wa Rahmatulah Wa Barakatuh, Comrade Students. How’s everybody doing today in our Glorious Workers’ Paradise?
I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across our new Socialist America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today, Comrades.
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. In fact, you are probably about as nervous as your grandma will be, once my health care reform has her up before a Death Panel.
I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning. As you know, my plan is to make America into a socialist state, that way you can just stay in bed all day and not work. That is what socialism is all about, you know.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia (where I was born) for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday – at 4:30 in the morning. After that, I studied all day about how to be a secret Muslim and a secret Socialist. I must have read the Koran 1,000 times and the Communist Manifesto at least as much. Ah, good old Karl Marx. You know, he was the least funny of the Marx brothers. Just a little socialist humor so you won’t cry as much when I get your Grandpa up before a Death Panel.
Now I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table, dreaming about forcing all Americans into same sex-marriages and nationalizing all industry. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.”
So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now I’ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I’ve talked a lot about responsibility. Mainly, I’ve talked about how the state will take responsibility for your life and how it will take responsibility for business by nationalizing them all. After we kill your grandparents, of course….
And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.
Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a good socialist and help me nationalize anything that is still left after you graduate. Or maybe you are good at killing old people and could be on one of my Death Panels. Or maybe you excel at performing abortions. I’m planning on making them mandatory, so we’ll need plenty of doctors for that. Or maybe you rock at wedding planning. Since same sex marriage will also be mandatory, we’ll need lots of wedding planners.
But what we won’t need are business people. After all, the state will own and run everything, Comrades….
….Thank you, Allah bless you, and Allah bless America.
Clever. Unfortunately, the reality is that a significant percentage of people in this country today believe that this is exactly the sort of speech that President Obama would like to give. We have parents saying, within earshot of their kids, that they are very scared about the leadership we have in our country at this time. In short, they have completely bought into every lie and half-truth that the GOP began feeding them during the presidential campaign. The question is, why has there been such a willingness, even eagerness to embrace the outrageous lies? There’s only answer. There are a lot of people in this country who are mortified that a black man is sitting in the White House. Because there’s no way that a black man could possibly be smart enough to lead this great country of ours. It’s a sad time to be American these days.
The fears about Obama do seem to be needlessly overblown. I can understand people being rationally worried about various policies that might impact them negatively (for example, raising taxes on the wealthy would give them rational grounds for concern). However, the sort of general fear that some folks profess seems baseless and irrational. I’m not sure if it is fear arising from him being black, though that no doubt applies in some cases.
In the Bush years, people did have some negative things to say about him and his folks, but most (but not all) of these complaints had a grounding in reality. Of course, there were some unfounded attacks on him (like the claims that he orchestrated 9/11).
The number one complaint I heard about Bush was “He sounds like an idiot!” with foam frothing from their mouths. Ummm, there were much better reasons to oppose him but apparently BDS doesn’t allow one to be rational.
Reeeeeeaaaaally? What a racist barrier you seem to be hiding behind. A conservative is color blind and judges on the content of character sir and not the color of one’s skin. I will not let you come here and think that you can safely say such crap without recourse. It is truly sad for you that you are so hinged on racism when it is the man’s policies and ideologies that are in question. Also his complete lack of understanding with economic theory. Since when does an ever increase in spending by a government with an ever falling GDP EVER help an economy? That is like spending more on credit cards to a crazy level whilst your income is steadily falling. Can anyone on this website explain how this is good. All the president can say is he was right because the rate of job decline is getting slower. well, DUH, it is easier to cut more jobs at the beginning of a slump than it is the further you go into an economic decline. It is easy to trim the unnecessary fat out of the work force at first. Redundancies and middle-management. Then it gets harder as companies try to hold on to vital positions. When we start GAINING jobs his words will gain a little more weight. Sinking is still sinking. This countries economy is waiting for Obama to decide how to pay for all of this spending. He has been extremely unclear. If he decides to go after the rich and corporations then look for the unemployment rate to go up even more as companies fold. I don’t give a flying crap what color the person is driving this country into the ditch. This good sir is why I oppose this president.
“Unfortunately, the reality is that a significant percentage of people in this country today..”
What percentage?
“There are a lot of people in this country who are mortified that a black man is sitting in the White House. Because there’s no way that a black man could possibly be smart enough to lead this great country of ours.”
Really? How many and have you ever even heard anyone say this? I certainly have not and I am around many Conservatives.
I take your GOP crazies and one up you with some Liberal crazies.
The final scream is priceless…
I watched the President’s speech, and personally, I saw
where there was only a challenge to our youth to put their
best foot forward. What type of example are we as adults
setting for our young people? It seems as if they are
setting an example for us,instead.
The furor over the speech seems to have been rather needless. As you note, it was basically a “stay in school, work hard and don’t do drugs, kids” sort of speech. Safe and appropriate for all kids…with not a hint of socialism. Unless, of course, you want to consider the fact that he was mainly addressing kids in public (socialist) schools. 🙂
Hmmm–sounds like the antithesis of what the anti-Bush people said for 8 years. You still have alot of work and craziness to go though, to come even close. Michale Moore is helping you as much as he can. Wonder who he voted for?
The left had the same paranoid fears about Bush – that he was a crazed nut job fascist who wanted to turn the U.S. into Hitler’s Germany. They forced his aids to attend hearings for a speech he gave to a school. It’s hilarious, as always, to watch both sides do the switch job in terms of reacting to stuff like this. No cultural memory at all.
At least the “controversy” about GHW Bush’s speech was AFTER it was delivered. No one was going on and on about being afraid he was going to brainwash their children. The “controversy” was about the COST of the speech/video, NOT the CONTENT!!! I think the idea of judging what someone MAY say is beyond absurd. And parents who limit their children to hearing ONLY opinions that they agree with are the ones doing the “indoctrinating”.
It does make sense to worry about what some folks might say, but that depends a great deal on the person. After all, what are the odds that Obama would turn a school speech into a socialist indoctrination event? Not allowing kids to hear the speech does seem to rather go against the ideals of democracy and good sense. After all, it seems unlikely that Obama would say anything that would hurt the kids. The controversy over the speech makes it sound a bit like Obama is on par with a radical artist or comedian who might just burst into obscenities or strip down naked in front of folks.
True. Folks should recall the fear-mongering about Bush and his folks. Of course, Bush gave people some real reasons to worry. To be fair, Obama probably will as well.
Obama will? I think you missed the boat my friend. He has already caused substantial damage to the economy. Our deficit is skyrocketing. The Administration said the CFO was wrong estimating the deficit to raise to 10 trillion over the same term that the Obamanites said 3 trillion. So who was right? I said 10 trillion also and now the administration is saying 10 trillion. They said the unemployment rate wouldn’t go beyond 8% if the stimulus package was put in place. The non-economically challenged were right again at at least 10%. Obama still lies to us to this day that there was no ‘pork’ or ‘earmarks’ in the Stimulus Bill. Say What?
The damage has been done.
More good news about the damage done. Pay for it? Why, we’ll just print more money. This is going to be a rough ride and Obama is claiming we are making economic progress. More like Limbo until he gets all of his incredible spending bills done and most importantly says how we are going to pay for it.
Yaaaaaay! “Yes We Can!(wreck the country).
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/6146957/China-alarmed-by-US-money-printing.html
HMMMM-Following the war in Afghanistan? That my friend, is the end of this administartion because he upped the ante without looking ahead. It was supposed to be easy.
Pull out: Look like you’ve lost. (In reality we lose nothing. But it’s politically unviable)
Stay In: Watch people die for next to nothing.
Oh–and there’s that pesky economy problem that just won’t go away no matter how many trillions we throw at it. Sigh…if only he’d listened and cut taxes……
Has everybody forgotten the “Obama Children’s Chorus” video from the election? It is pretty creepy.
Do you seriously think that “Hitler is our Lord” and “We will die for Hitler” is the same as “We will change the world” and “Yes We Can”?????
Amber, this is a philosophy blog, and the point is to try to understand what is going on, not dogmatically assert our opinions. In this case I was linking to a video that made the rounds during the election that is certainly influencing the reaction to Obama’s school address.
On the other hand, the girl in the video did seem to have a glazed look in her eyes…
TJ: I’ve seen glazed looks (people exiting car dealerships, signing financial papers, sitting in some church pews). Another opinion: The little girl’s look appears to be a look of concentration (as she tries to remember the words perhaps?).
To Amber: “. . .and the point is to try to understand what is going on, not dogmatically assert our opinions.” TJ
We wish. I’ve been coming here for a bit less than a year, and I feel safe in saying that you probably won’t have a hard time distinguishing liberal from conservative posters here. Among the posters there’s plenty of dogma; assertions abound. Occasionally you’ll see words like “perhaps” “maybe”. At times it seems Michael’s the only one who’s really trying to “understand what is going on.”
Looking forward to your participation. Note: My rant/post about the metric system further down the page is abnormal for both me and this site. 🙂
Yes, Biomass must have forgotten his meds.
It is a little closer than not having children chant political slogans.
kernunos: “It is a little closer than not having children chant political slogans.”
How about a little clarifying context (like giving us an idea what the word “it” refers to)? And “closer” to what?

You state this with such assurance that I must ask for documentation of the claim.
k:You just I’m going to bring this up from now on unless you make some attempt to answer my question. 🙂
“It is a little closer than not having children chant political slogans.”
He’s saying that children chanting “yes we can” is a little closer to children chanting “hitler is lord” than children chanting nothing at all….But that is about as valid as saying that Bill O’Reilly is an Al Qaeda operative because there is video evidence that he and Osama Bin Laden have both said controversial things about the United States. Maybe if Bill O’Reilly had just said nothing at all……wait, he may be on to something after all!!!!
Let’s say Bush had addressed the nation’s schoolkids, and said they they needed to study hard because the nation needed their brainpower to win the war on terror.
Any guesses as to how the opposition party would have responded?
The Democrats? With disorganized outrage.
I am sure there would be many many people offended by such a speech. But again, I see a clear distinction between telling children the country needs their brainpower for a war, and telling them to work hard to achieve their own personal goals. Although, and I am only speaking for myself here, I would have allowed my children to see the speech and then use the opportunity to talk to them about what was said and why I agree or disagree with certain aspects. I am also sure that my republican husband would weigh in on his point of view as well. At least that is what I hope most parents would do. All children (and adults for that matter) should be exposed to the opinions of others in order to form their own. Children are individuals, not carbon copies of their parents, and they are fully capable of making up their own minds about politics.
“How about a little clarifying context (like giving us an idea what the word “it” refers to)? And “closer” to what?”
Which “it” that I have said Biomass? I have said lots of its. You are being picky to the point of being an annoying ass. You know which it.
You wrote: ” A spinal cord’s fluid contains a “person’s history of all the chemicals they have taken in. Any drugs you have taken can be found in traces there. There is no drug flushing you can do to get rid of it.”

Again, you are being an obsessive ass if you are going to bring this up in every post. This coming from a childish man upset with his mother spending her money by her choice to a church where she wanted to. Waaah! See, I can be an ass also.
“Any guesses as to how the opposition party would have responded?”
Not me.Your question seems to invite partisan rancor and/or dogmatic quibbling. I do believe amber(below,9/9 12:27) does a good job of avoiding both.
Seems that in these days when our focus is on government spending and government waste my question (below)– about how much money this country might save should it convert to the metric system–though it requires some forward (as opposed to backward) speculation is a bit more concrete and may actually be fruitful. Some research might actually provide a useful response.
amber:”All children (and adults for that matter) should be exposed to the opinions of others. . .” Indeed. But I’d add a caveat: The opinions they’re exposed to should vary widely. They should also be exposed, as often as possible, to the experience(s) of others.Travel with them across country. Take them to countries where the people are of a different color or practice different religions. Or where the people follow a different political system.
“Children are individuals, not carbon copies of their parents, and they are fully capable of making up their own minds about politics.”
Amen to the first clause. But, having raised two children (and having been one myself, I think)they don’t get to a point where they can fully “mak[e] up their own minds” early on. They can’t even wisely choose what two flavors to put on an ice cream cone. So I would guess they’d be pretty easy to indoctrinate with many of their parent’s beliefs and/or prejudices.
biomass2:The opinions they’re exposed to should vary widely. They should also be exposed, as often as possible, to the experience(s) of others.Travel with them across country. Absolutely! I completely agree!
“So I would guess they’d be pretty easy to indoctrinate with many of their parent’s beliefs and/or prejudices.”
I agree with this as well. I have seen proof of such claims on more than one occasion. That is why I believe that it is not a parent’s job to indoctrinate their children. Teach them core values….your religious beliefs if you have them, socially acceptable behavior, human kindness and humility, the basics that make someone a “decent human being”……but as far as the best way to reduce the GND, whether or not a public option is the way to go with health care reform, or whatever the hot-button topic of the moment is, that is where I believe that these children will be able to form their own opinions. With age, education, and exposure of course. No one expects an 8 year old to really have any idea of how to reduce the GND. 🙂
kernunos:”Again, you are being an obsessive ass if you are going to bring this up in every post.”
So, I’m an “obsessive ass”, if I call you on an apparent falsehood. . . 🙂 We live in an era when all kinds of garbage is being fed to us as fact on tv and radio. Can one be too obsessive about expecting the truth?

And who said ( this article-9/8 9:07 pm above)“I will not let you come here and think that you can safely say such crap without recourse.”How does your claim about spinal fluid compare with jounrj08’s “crap”? What kind of ass does that make you?
Note: I responded to magus71’s plea (9/9 8:30 am-“Archaeology, Evidence&God” to desist and told him “OK. Maybe. But only for you. :)” Then a few moments later I read your “crap” line that I quoted above and posted the following (8:42 am):
“I just found that [your “crap” statement] as part of a kernunos post on “Secret School Speech”. In light of that statement, what do you think? Should I keep my recent promise to you, or should I continue until kernunos supports claim?”
So your fate lies in magus71’s hands.
In the case of your sentence, the word “it” should have a clear and easily identifiable antecedent. Your “it” doesn’t. A reader shouldn’t have to fill in the writer’s “blanks”.
Let’s remember that what started the controversy was the suggested lesson plan put out by the White House:
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/09/09/couricandco/entry5297165.shtml
Last week the White House took some heat for a proposed speech to children, and an accompanying lesson plan for teachers. The plan called for kids to write a letter stating how they could help President Obama.
Critics said that sounded a bit too “Chairman Mao,” so the Department of Education changed it to a letter about personal goals.
Yes, a SUGGESTED lesson plan……not required. Although, I do see where some people could have offense with the wording of “how you can help the President”. It is conceivable that some people would take that as some forced pledge of obedience to the President himself, and not to the country as a whole. Conceivable, but still somewhat irrational. I remember, clearly, writing a letter to the President when I was in grade school. This is nothing new. The White House admitted that the wording was misleading and changed it. I still fail to see how this change in some way hints at a hidden agenda, Or how it proves that there was some politically charged, socialist indoctrinating, first draft of the speech.
“The plan called for kids to write a letter stating how they could help President Obama.”
It does sound “governmental.” And we all know that government is evil. But cut the man a break; God knows, he’s not getting much help on the Hill.
——-
“The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. You young people, full of vigor and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning. Our hope is placed on you.” — Chairman Mao
……………………………..
Hmm. By golly, he does sound like Obama. And three letters in their names are the same! Is the sentiment stated in the quotation therefore wrong?
The Nazi party experts did refine the science of rhetoric originated by the sophists. Naturally, folks still use the tools they developed (in this case, singing kids and getting kids while they are young). However, it is important to distinguish methods from content. After all, the same methods are used to sell everything from lunch meat (“I wish I were an Oscar Mayer…”) to Cola (“I’d like to buy the world a coke…”). Yet, I would not be inclined to accuse Oscar Mayer of being like the Nazis in any meaningful way.
Also, Obama’s speech was just a speech of the usual sort that folks give to kids about school: stay in school, work hard, dream of success and all that. Now, if he had talked about needing “elbow room” or how some folks are a cancer eating away at our national purity, then we should be worried.
Yes, the speech was great. It was Conservative.
The speech, its content and delivery, seemed American to me: neither conservative nor liberal. American.
No, Conservative which is in its core very American. Private Conservative schools do much better than public schools run by Liberal Unions.
“public schools run by Liberal Unions.”
Your locally elected (by ‘Americans’) school boards (again, ‘Americans’) decide the policies followed and curricula taught; the boards administer the federal, local, and state funding (provided in every case by ‘American’ taxpayer dollars), and are responsible to a great extent—and should be held more responsible, in my opinion– for the quality of teaching that goes on within classroom walls. are responsible for hiring competent administrators who can fairly and effectively evaluate teachers, give intelligent guidance to those who need and want it, and make sure the incompetents are dismissed. Many boards (made up of Americans–conservative, liberal, independents, libertarians, etc.) fail miserably at their jobs.
——
Another board-related problem. Teacher tenure laws, which arose for the most part because the process of hiring and firing teachers (Americans) by local school boards (Americans)was highly politicized (surprise!), are closely guarded by unions because they fear–and rightly so, I believe–that the patronage system would return if tenure protections were removed. If that should happen, teachers could be fired because it was necessary to create an opening for a relative (that’s called nepotism) or because they belong to the wrong political party. Without tenure and the unions to defend it, teachers might have to spend years in court fighting unjust dismissals. Why, those mean greedy lawyers we all want to kill first thing would really make a killing then. I’d argue that that would be worse than “Liberal (American) Unions”.
It’s up to the to police the teachers during the probationary period, however long that may be, and work to assure that the quality of every teacher who receives tenure meets standards that guarantee a quality education for our students.
Please accept the following change to the above post (9/9 3:49 pm).
“It’s up to the to police the teachers during the probationary period . . .”
should read
“It’s up to the board and administration to police the teachers during the probationary period, . . .
Thank you, TJ, for the clarification. I am new to this blog, and am finding it very intriguing!
It is an excellent blog. Thanks, Mike!
Thanks, T.J. Just doing my part to give folks something to do at work other than work. 🙂
Let us not forget what Marx said about our children. I’m sure Mike can tell us as he is a Communist expert just as at least a few of Obama’s Czars, friends and past acquaintances are. What is that quote Mike?
Better yet is Lenin’s quote on children. Oh, wait, Stalin’s is great too. Oh, my! Too many good Commies to choose from.

I’m sorry to see some people say that their Deans don’t appreciate blogging — my Dean has been very encouraging, and in fact says that he thinks it counts as scholarship, which surely makes me — on a word-count basis, at least — one of the most productive scholars around. . . .

Thanks 🙁
And by the way, I’m still pissed that Ronald Reagan sabotaged America’s conversion to the metric system. Now it’s just us and Myanmar, and . . . Liberia. Holy shit. Every damn time I want to find out how many calories are in a f*****g piece of frozen pie I have to google a sonsabitchin’ metric converter. 🙁 🙁
Be forewarned. . .I find out you had anything to do with that, I’m coming after you, and I’ll be packin’ heat.
Just eat the damn pie. 🙂
You can keep your metric system as I have no problem with math. Maybe you should exercise a little and get away from the blogs.
I have to exercise for longer periods at a slower pace–weak ticker. The valve problem’s not related in any way to my pie consumption. 🙂 My running and biking days are for all intents and purposes over, unfortunately.
I wonder how much money would be saved over a twenty year period if packaging no longer had to show both metric and “standard” (imperial) measures? If parts from other countries would be fully interchangeable with American parts? If shops didn’t have to maintain sets of both metric and standard tools? Anyone have any guesses?
“Maybe you should exercise a little and get away from the blogs,” said the pot to the kettle.
Ah, that would be a dream come true. Right? 🙂
First off I do not think there is much of a problem with the speech. After all, it was VERY Conservative in nature. Secondly, the fervor is over what the administration and the NEA(National Educators Association) instructed the teaching community to do before the speech. Maybe it was just the wording but to have children write letters to themselves on how they can ‘serve’ the president is a little disturbing. Isn’t he supposed to be serving the people? Speaking of the NEA(National Endowments for the Arts), the White House was having a conference call with them to try to orchestrate politically on how to tackle national issues. Or so it would appear. This is interesting as this organization gets taxpayer money to operate and the current administration is trying to use them to a political end? I wonder how many lines this crosses. I still do not understand how the Left politicians are using ACORN as a political tool when they too receive taxpayer money. This seems illegal and at the very least highly unethical. This whole school speech though is pretty much a non-issue. There are bigger fish to fry and more important issues.
Here is the link for the conference call.

Yes they are capable of making up their own minds about politics, just as they are capable about making up their own minds about if they should shoot up heroin or play in traffic. It’s up to the parents to mak sure that they make the right choice–not to let them randomly assign themselves belief systems or act in anyway they please. And yes–that means polical views get passed down. I grew up for the fist part of my life with my grandparents–so yeah–I’m old school in many ways. Not just old. And I’m glad I wasn’t left to do whatever I pleased.
Yes, parents should guide their children in the right direction in regards to harmful and/or socially acceptable behavior. But I covered this already here:
(09/09/09 2:00pm)-Teach them core values….your religious beliefs if you have them, socially acceptable behavior, human kindness and humility, the basics that make someone a “decent human being”…
It is one thing to raise a responsible and healthy child and it is quite another to attempt to sway them in their own lives. Concern about government controlling every aspect of our lives? ha Parents try to do that on a daily basis. And as far as passing belief systems down to children…..is the fair tax a belief system? Is the war on terror a belief system? Political affiliation is not a belief system. Not to me anyway. It is basically me lining myself up with ideas that closely reflect my own. Every American has a right and a responsibility to decide what they think is the best way to handle our problems and act on that. It is entirely possible to raise happy, healthy, and productive children without expecting them to vote the same way you do. Do you think that anyone that doesn’t vote the way you do is lacking in morals or human decency? I would hope not!
“….Thank you, Allah bless you, and Allah bless America.”
Thanks for helping in the War on Terror. You just incited a massive riot somewhere in Syria, because of your impiety. At least 122 potential jihadists are reported dead.
Only 122? I need to work on my game.
