This is not exactly philosophical, but is practical.
I use Firefox as my primary browser. If you aren’t, you should be. I have found that sometimes WordPress and other sites display rather badly in Firefoox. The best way to describe it is that the sites look like they have been warped back in time to the early 1990s.
Using the Web Developer plug in for Firefox (the Validate CSS tool to be precise) I found two errors in the CSS for WordPress. I used IE to check the pages and they looked fine. Thus, I inferred the problem was on my end and with Firefox. Since the problem was intermittent and also occurred on my office PC, I inferred it had to be something that changed on both computers. The logical candidate was something that Firefox stored but also could be removed/change. This lead me to the Clear Private Data option in the Tools menu of Firefox. I did that (use the default) and it worked fine. My guess would be that it was a cache issue.
Mission accomplished.
Good points. I’ll clear mine right now.
I have also noticed my computer running slower since I started wordpress.
Any suggestions?
If you have a Windows PC, some common causes of slowdowns are
1. Drive fragmentation. To fix this, right click on your drive icon, select tools and then select the defragment option. This will take a few hours so it is best to do it at night or when you won’t be using your PC for a while. Not everyone agrees about the value of defragging, but it can’t really hurt.
2. Registry junk. To fix this, you can use the free CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com/ It also can free up disk space by getting rid of needless files. Web browser tend to pile up lots of junk-CCleaner will take care of that.
3. Virus or spyware: you’ll need anti-virus and anti-spyware software. I use the Zone Alarm Suite as well as Webroot Spy Sweeper. There are some free programs out there that do a decent job as well. There is a bunch of fee stuff reviewed at PC World http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,116456-page,1/article.html
Was hoping this fix would help me with my issue. If viewing my website in firefox, the sidebar moves to the bottom of the screen. If I use IE, it looks fine. I don’t want to go back to IE!!!! Clearing the private date didn’t work. Still looking for a fix.
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.
Thank you do much, I downloaded Firebug and it didn’t show up anything at all. I just deleted my cache and hey presto, it works.
Thank you again 🙂
That problem really annoyed me, so I’m pleased to be able to help others solve it.
I have that problem too, so I use Opera – it is just much better than firefox, and also open source. However, people who read the blog I work with use fire fox, and I need a way to edit it so that we all can have a good view of the site… still dont know how…
I’ve switched to Chrome as my main browser-haven’t had any problems with WP using it. I do keep Firefox and IE installed, though. There are still some sites (such as my university email) that work best (or at all) with IE.
This was driving me crazy, but emptied the cache and that did it. Thanks!
Glad to help.
I’ve got a similar problem, but this time, clearing the cache does nothing to help it. Chrome and Firefox both display the page incorrectly, but IE8 works fine with it. The site is theretriever.org. Does anyone have insight as to what’s wrong with it?
i had the same problem, then i discovered it’s adblock plus problem. simply disable on wordpress.com sites
I have this sort of problem too – and clearing the cache and disabling Adblock don’t fix it, unfortunately.
I solved the problem by following the instructions I found somewhere for creating a new Firefox ‘profile’. Note that doing this does delete many of one’s settings. But this is a solution.
